One of the greatest
disappointments you may have practically witnessed with your smartphones is the
reckless abandon with which the battery of your smartphone runs down. This should
be of no amazement to you given the varying capabilities and multi
functionality of the type of smartphones prevalent in our market nowadays.
Until we get those ‘out of this
world’ phones which can run continuously for weeks without running down, the
only option we have now for getting the best out of those mobile devices is to
find ways to maximize the battery life of the device we now have. Let us look
at the ways we can excellently manage the power on our mobile devices.
Switch off your data connection
The chief battery sucker on your
smartphones is unarguably the status of your data connection. There are many
advantages of putting off your data connection when you are not using it but
for the benefit of staying within our context, we will be looking at how it
helps to secure our battery life.
Off course we know that when the data
connection is on, many things like automatic update of applications,
notifications from some apps, updates on latest news, high scores on some games
and many other things inevitably come in. the big gist there is that each time
we get that notification or update, your phone lights up, vibrates and probably
makes some kind of sounds. All these take a particular chunk of power in your
phone. Also, for your phone to receive those notifications, it has to take
extra power to connect to the base station and this takes power.
Deactivate radio functions when not in use
Whenever your smartphones
searches for signals, energy is highly consumed from your smartphone. Things like
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, hotspots, 3G etc will always continue to scan and search for
signals and stronger connections anytime they are on whether you are using it
or not. The hook is that these repeated searches always take a greater chunk of
your battery power.
The point is that you switch them off when not in use or look for zones with very high signals for strong connection and receptivity to stop the constant searching and connection to the radio networks.
Close every app you are not using
Applications running in the
background of your phone must be ‘drinking’ the energy on your battery whether
you like it or not. The fact is that as that application is running, your battery power is going. Many folks just
go ahead to minimize the apps or click on the home icon thinking that they closed
the app but they actually did not.
So take your time and locate the ‘exit’
or ‘close’ button on that application and click on it; confirm the closure with
a ‘yes’ if required.
Turn off vibrations
You might require the phone vibrations
when you are in a meeting or a place where it might be embarrassing for your
phone to ring out. But when not in such a condition, it is advisable to have
your phones ring out than vibrate because it takes more energy from your phone.
Some games also have vibrations on them, you can deactivate them also.
The hook there is that your phone’s
speakers alone vibrate when the phone is ringing but it is your entire phone
that is vibrating courtesy of a motorized vibrator inside your phone; put it
off.
Maintain optimal temperature on your smartphones
Simple observation tells us that our
battery runs down faster when it is hot. So do everything possible to reduce
the temperature of your phone. Some of us either by omission or commission,
some of us leave our phones under direct sunlight e.g. car dashboards or
leaving your phones inside a closed parked car.
Also, using the 3G network
connectivity can increase the temperature of your phone at times. So minimize
it or use it only when necessary. The last thing your smartphones need is heat;
so expel them.
