The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier-General Johnson Bamidele Olawumi has made it known that plans are already underway to make the NYSC scheme voluntary.
Speaking to President Muhammadu Buhari on the issue when a delegation of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development led by Mrs. Rabi Jimeta, the Permanent Secretary, paid a courtesy call on the president Wednesday, the DG said, “This, is to reduce the corps population and make the programme more sustainable.”
Speaking further on the issue, the permanent secretary made it clear that the number of corps members participating in the scheme has been on the increase since after its inception. “The annual enrolment of corps participants had increased from 2,364 at its inception in 1974 to 229,016 in 2014.
Given the increasing number of tertiary institutions, our projection is that the number of corps participants may rise to 300,000 by year 2020”, Jimeta said.
The president also affirmed that his administration firmly believes in the NYSC and its vision of national integration.
