Corps Members to smile to the bank as NYSC secures N200 million bank loan facility

Corps membersCorps Members with the entrepreneurial mindset who have also undergone the SAED training in the NYSC camp will soon have a cause to rejoice as the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Brig.-Gen. Johnson Bamidele Olawumi has made it known that The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) had secured over N200 million bank facility for disbursement to corps members as loans to enable them start their businesses.

He made this known when the Commander, Guards Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brig.-Gen. Musa Yusuf, paid him a courtesy call in the NYSC Headquarters in Abuja on Friday.

“That has been a challenge;" he said,  "we train these corps members in the camp after the camp we have partners all over the country where corps members also receive training throughout the service year.
According to Olawumi, the National Youth Service Corps has so far trained over 400,000 corps members since the commencement of its skills acquisition programme in over twelve (12) different skills.
He said that the NYSC, under the sponsorship of the World Bank, is currently partnering with an international organisation to train corps members who are interested in going into the building and property development sector.
“Now, the issue is that when they get this training they don’t have start-up capital but we have been doing a lot to see there is opportunity for them to get startup capital. We have the NYSC foundation as we speak, the NYSC foundation has just approved loan worth N10 million for corps members and Corps members based on the business plan they submit could get as much as N250, 000 and N400, 000”.
The Director-General said that they have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Bank of Industry though it is yet to take off but are working on it. He also made it clear that an agreement has been reached with the Heritage Bank to set aside a budget of N200 million package where Corps Members can have access to soft loans  with their discharge certificate as the only collateral they need.
Further more on the issue, he said, “ We are also talking with Central Bank Governor to see that a micro credit loan could be arranged specially to address corps members in this category.”

Why You Don’t Need Recharge Cards

With the level of technological advancement hitting the Nigerian banking sector, don’t be surprised that in the future (not so far from now), recharge cards will be a thing of the past.

We have had several technological developments in banks, the latest being the mobile recharge system. No matter where you are, all you need is just an account with the bank and a registered phone number with which you receive alerts. As a matter of fact, if you are receiving alerts already on your phone, you are already seconds away from delving into this life-easing and enjoyable auto-recharge system.

Since I came in contact with this information, I can’t remember the last time I bought a physical recharge card as this has relegated the idea.  You can decide to top up your account directly or get the recharge pin sent to your phone or the phone number you want to bless.
This also relegates to oblivion the idea of borrowing airtime credit from service providers only for them to sweep your airtime the moment you load them; how annoying this can be especially when you have forgotten you are owing them.
We’ll be giving you the procedures for some of the Nigerian banks

First Bank
Just dial *894* amount #
You can also download the FirstMonie app to recharge directly from there

First City Monument Bank (FCMB)
Just dial *389*214* amount #
You can also download the FCMB mobile app to download to recharge directly from there

Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB)

NYSC Federal Allowance Increase – Why all the Fuss?

NYSC camp
Trending on social media now is the issue of the purported increase in the federal government monthly allowance of National Youth Service Corps members.

Hardly will you visit any forum of corps members on the internet without seeing multiple posts in that line either trying to pull the legs of members or trying to insinuate something they think should be the right thing to be done by Mr. President at the moment.

We hear different things like “the ‘allawee’ has been increased from N19,800 to N49,800” while others leave it at a modest N39,800. Some bloggers have also not helped issues as they have gone to the extent of publishing false and misleading information with some illegal ‘proofs’ about the increase on them. Some corps members have also posted things that suggest they already have it all sorted out with all the information they need to be sure that the rumours were true.
So the big question follows – does this matter warrant all these noise being made about it or not? Is it worth all the anxiety being accorded it?

Common sense should tell us that if such thing is on the table, it can never be a hidden news or agenda; even the birds will carry the news. Such things should not be a clandestine idea that will keep us refreshing social media web pages; our national dailies and the electronic media will surely pounce on this kind of information and do a great job of making sure that every ant on the street gets a wind of the information even before the bloggers get such news.

So for the benefit of our corps members, please relax and enjoy the little allowance you have now, zero your mind concerning the ‘allawee increase’ to save yourself the trauma and heart attack that comes with this kind of rumours. The increase will come when it will come and there is absolutely little or nothing you can do about it; so relax and serve your nation – Under the Sun or in the Rain!

There are plans to make the NYSC scheme voluntary – NYSC DG

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier-General Johnson Bamidele Olawumi has made it known that plans are already underway to make the NYSC scheme voluntary.

Speaking to President Muhammadu Buhari on the issue when a delegation of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development led by Mrs.  Rabi Jimeta, the Permanent Secretary, paid a courtesy call on the president Wednesday, the DG said, “This, is to reduce the corps population and make the programme more sustainable.”
Speaking further on the issue, the permanent secretary made it clear that the number of corps members participating in the scheme has been on the increase since after its inception. “The annual enrolment of corps participants had increased from 2,364 at its inception in 1974 to 229,016 in 2014.

Given the increasing number of tertiary institutions, our projection is that the number of corps participants may rise to 300,000 by year 2020”, Jimeta said.
The president also affirmed that his administration firmly believes in the NYSC and its vision of national integration.

Buhari - I firmly believe in NYSC

President Muhammadu Buhari has pledged that his administration is committed to taking all necessary action in maintaining the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

He made this known on Wednesday 5th August, after receiving a briefing from a delegation of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development led by Mrs.  Rabi Jimeta, the Permanent Secretary; saying that the NYSC programme was still relevant for national integration and unity and also expressed his trust that the objectives of its formation in 1973 was still very relevant.
Rightly commenting on the issue, Buhari said, “I firmly believe in NYSC and I think it should remain a national programme to promote integration.

Whenever I go home to Daura, I look out for Corps members from Lagos, Aba and other parts of the country and I am always thrilled to learn that except for the NYSC, some of them have never left their states of origin to visit other cities in the country.”
Jimeta had earlier on brought to the notice of the president the increasing number of participants in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)n scheme which is posing a challenge to the scheme due to the dwindling revenue accruing from the national budget which is failing  to cater for their needs.
